Plot Summary

Early 1900s, Argentina. Dick Mahler sneaks onto a ship he believes is bound for India—but ends up in St. Petersburg, Russia, with nothing and no way back. He drifts until a traveling circus takes him in, a place where everything has a role, and staying means learning how to fit into one.
