Plot Summary
We have read that, "Injustice of untouchability is a Sin, a Crime and an Inhuman practice". Despite these moral judgments, Untouchability continues to exist, particularly within the realm of music. The ancient drum (Indian Parai), a symbol of both cultural heritage and caste-based oppression, remains confined to the lower castes, who are seen as"untouchables." These individuals are the ones allowed to play this sacred music, reinforcing their marginalized status. However, the belief that music is universal, meant to be shared by all, stands in stark contrast to this discriminatory practice. The narrative challenges the ongoing oppression and envisions a future where the drum, and its music, is liberated from caste constraints, accessible to everyone, regardless of their social standing. Maangubigu Parai questions whether this dream of equality and freedom has been realized or if the struggles still persist.
